Privacy Policy

This policy explains what happens to personal information when you use papercliplaw.com. It covers the website only. If you are a client of the firm, the information in your file is also governed by our professional obligations, which are stricter than this policy.

Who we are

Paperclip Law is a law firm at 120 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver, British Columbia V7M 2E8. You can reach us at hello@papercliplaw.com or (604) 973-0188. We are responsible for the personal information described below.

What we collect

Information you give us

If you fill in an enquiry form on this site, we receive what you type into it. Depending on the form, that is your name, email address, phone number, company name, the area of law you are asking about, how you heard about us, and whatever you write in the message field.

You choose what to put in that message. Please do not include sensitive details about your matter in an enquiry form. Until we have agreed to act for you, nothing you send through this site is protected by solicitor-client privilege.

The estate planning workbook

Our online estate planning workbook asks for more than an enquiry form does: details about you and your partner, your children and family, your home and other property, your assets and debts, and your wishes for your will and estate. It is the one form on this site built to hold that kind of detail, and it goes only to our estates team.

While you fill it in, your answers are saved in your own browser, on your device, so you can leave and come back. They stay there for up to 30 days or until you send the workbook, whichever comes first, and you can remove them sooner by clearing this site's data in your browser. If you are using a shared or public computer, finish in one sitting or clear the browser afterwards.

When you press Send, your answers are emailed to our estates team with a one-page summary and, where your browser can prepare it, a copy of our estate planning workbook filled in with your answers. You receive a confirmation email with the summary attached. We use what you send to prepare for your first meeting and to discuss acting for you. As with every form on this site, sending the workbook does not make us your lawyers, so share what you are comfortable with and leave the rest for your meeting.

Information collected automatically

When you load a page, our host records standard technical information including your IP address, browser, device type and the pages you requested. This is ordinary web server activity and we use it to keep the site running and secure.

We also use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: which pages people read, roughly where visitors are located, how they arrived, and interactions such as scrolling, outbound link clicks, file downloads and the fact that a form was sent (never what was in it). Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to do this.

Why we use it

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not use automated decision making or profiling.

Cookies and analytics

The only cookies this site sets are the ones Google Analytics uses to tell repeat visits apart. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.

You can block cookies in your browser settings, or install Google's opt-out add-on, and the site will still work normally.

Who else sees it

We use a small number of service providers, and only for the purposes above:

We may also disclose personal information where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to establish or defend a legal claim.

Where it is stored

These providers operate outside Canada, including in the United States. That means your personal information may be stored or processed outside Canada and may be accessible to foreign courts, law enforcement and regulators under the laws of those countries. If you would rather not have your information handled that way, contact us by phone or post instead of using the forms on this site.

How long we keep it

Google Analytics data is deleted automatically after 14 months.

Enquiries that do not become files are kept only as long as we need them to respond and to keep a record of who contacted us, and are then deleted. If you become a client, your file is retained for the period our professional obligations require, which is longer.

Your rights

You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it if it is wrong, and withdraw your consent to our use of it at any time, subject to legal and professional limits. Email hello@papercliplaw.com and we will respond within the time the law allows.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.

Security

The site is served over an encrypted connection and access to enquiries is limited to people at the firm who need it. No website can be guaranteed completely secure, which is the reason for the caution above about what you put in a form.

Children

This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be described here rather than made quietly.
